Foundations for the Future: Advancing DEI through Graduate Student Leadership is a one-day symposium that is designed to bring together student groups [and faculty] in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at Yale that are committed to advancing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) in STEM on campus.
The symposium will start with an interactive keynote session led by Susanne Young, Assistant Dean for Graduate Student Professional Development. This session will focus on the vital role of student leadership in advancing DEI initiatives and include an open discussion about professional development opportunities for student leaders in DEI.
Following the keynote, a panel of faculty will share their insights on contributions to DEI, the importance of student leadership and strategies for building stronger partnerships between faculty and student organizations. Faculty will also reflect on their own professional development journeys, offering advice and perspectives on cultivating impactful leadership within DEI.
Select DEI student leaders will then have the opportunity to participate in a roundtable-style discussion. This session will provide a platform to:
- Share innovative approaches to fostering DEI initiatives and discuss challenges being faced in advancing these efforts
- Exchange ideas and strategies for creating a more inclusive campus community
- Explore opportunities for cross-organization collaboration and collective action
- Reflect on and share best practices for becoming more effective and empowered leaders in DEI
The roundtable discussion will be followed by a networking session where attendees can continue to build connections with one another and exchange ideas on how to create a more inclusive campus community.
Location: McDougal Center Programming Room
