Culture and Belonging

Fostering a welcoming, inclusive, and respectful environment

Our Community in the News

Diversity Statement

We are committed to promoting a diverse, equitable, and inclusive community that celebrates and emphasizes respect for individuals from all races, nationalities, ethnicities, genders, sexual orientations, backgrounds, socioeconomic statuses, religions, identities, abilities, and ideologies. Diversity is a core value that needs to guide departmental decisions and policies. We are dedicated to achieving a departmental community that:

  • Fosters a working and learning environment that shows respect for all individuals regardless of their background, career stage, or status.
  • Educates and trains all members of our department about how implicit and explicit biases affect decision-making and recognizes and addresses biased behavior.
  • Removes barriers to the recruitment, retention, and advancement of talented students, faculty, and staff from historically underrepresented populations.
  • Encourages open dialogue and builds a community of support amongst all students, staff, and faculty, where everyone can feel appreciated and valued for their unique experiences and contributions.

DEIB Peer Resource Advocates

Trained volunteers who serve as a resource for all

Our goal is to create an environment where everyone feels valued and belongs and to support colleagues confronting discrimination, harassment, mental health challenges, and other issues related to equity, inclusion, and climate. We offer training workshops open to the department, host social events to unite the department, and serve as familiar faces for students seeking guidance.
