Inspiring Young Students, Tomorrow’s Chemists

Outreach

The Department of Chemistry’s outreach efforts provide K-12 students with opportunities to learn about chemistry from passionate scientists. We participate in several outreach programs and events offered through the Yale Office of New Haven Affairs’ Pathways to Science initiative, and faculty and students also organize their own initiatives.

Students participate in special events, lectures, demos, lab tours, and research.

Explore Opportunities

  • The Wonderful World of Chemistry: A Magic Show

The one-hour interactive lecture introduces basic chemistry concepts through “magic” tricks explained through the science lens.

  • Science on Saturdays

Lectures by Yale professors and engaging science demonstrations by Yale college students bring together Yale scientists and local residents in a shared sense of wonder.

  • Summer Programs

The Pathways to Science scholar program offers three five-day chemistry workshops to high school students during the summer.

  • Open Labs at Yale

A group of students, postdocs, and other university members dedicated to scientific outreach offer four signature programs to the local New Haven community.

  • West Campus Pathways to Science Festivals

Through a series of mini-lectures, experiments, and demos, students learn nanotechnology, photochemistry, laser technology, and more.

  • Discover Chemistry Day

High school students participate in hands-on chemistry experiments that encourage inquiry, examination, and exploration.

  • Nitrogen Fixers

Our PhD students teach catalysis and the scientific method through demonstrations and lessons to students in middle and high school chemistry classes. Both virtual and in-person formats are available.
