Research

Many of nature’s most important chemical and biological phenomena emerge far from equilibrium across broad spatial and temporal scales. Yet, connecting molecular interactions to emergent larger-scale (“mesoscale”) structures and collective behavior remains one of the central challenges, limiting our ability to predict and ultimately control complex materials and living systems.

The Jin group develops predictive multiscale theories and computational methods to uncover how molecular principles give rise to mesoscale assembly and organization in materials and biophysical systems, particularly under far-from-equilibrium conditions. At the intersection of chemistry, physics, materials science, and artificial intelligence, we integrate large-scale molecular simulations, bottom-up coarse-graining, field-theoretic methods, and machine learning to advance our ability to predict and control complex chemical phenomena. These non-equilibrium coarse-graining approaches enable predictive studies of material growth on surfaces, biomolecular phase separation, and cellular organization and development. Through these efforts, our research program aims to address the fundamental principles governing non-equilibrium molecular processes and establish rational design frameworks for advanced materials and biomolecular systems, with applications ranging from energy technologies to therapeutic discovery.
