Title:  Multi-Proton Multi-Electron Reduction of Diatomics

O2, NO and CO are diatomics which play diverse important roles in nature and. These diatomics form stable adducts with ferrous iron porphyrins. The ferrous iron porphyrin adducts of O2 and NO in natural enzymatic active sites activate these for the cleavage of X-O (X=O and N) bond. In this lecture the reactivity of synthetic FeII-O2, FeII-NO and FeII-CO will be discussed with the focus being on the reduction of these diatomics. Reduction of O2 to H2O, NO to NH3 and CO to CH4 will be discussed. Mechanistic investigations using different spectroscopic techniques like resonance Raman, EPR, Mössbauer and FTIR will be used to identify the reactive intermediates involved with the goal of elucidating the factors that control the selectivity and reactivity. The results obtained show remarkable similarities in the mechanism of reduction of O2, NO and CO by iron porphyrins.
