Visiting Undergraduates Participating in Research or Clinical Activities formerly known as - Visiting Student in Research (VSR)

Policy for Visiting Undergraduates Participating in Research or Clinical Activities- Visiting Undergraduates Participating in Research or Clinical Activities. Undergraduate students 18 years of age or older who are currently enrolled in an accredited degree-granting institution other than Yale may request an opportunity to participate in approved educational research and/or clinical activities under the mentorship of a Yale faculty member.

The purpose of the Visiting Undergraduates Participating in Research or Clinical Activities participation in research/clinical activities at Yale is to provide the student an opportunity for research/clinical experience under the mentorship of a member of the Yale faculty. The research/clinical experience at Yale is solely for the educational benefit of the student and does not constitute an employment relationship between the student and Yale. A Visiting Undergraduates Participating in Research or Clinical Activities may receive a stipend directly from his/her home institution, or receive other fellowship support. Support through Yale administered funds is permissible only when it is provided as a stipend to support an educational experience (e.g. under provisions of an NSF REU Supplement). Click here for details about the Sackler NSF REU.

In order to pay an undergraduate from another institution, the student must be hired through Human Resources in a temporary intern position. This option has not been widely used in our department. For this process, please submit a brief statement of the work to be performed to Lisa Thomas and allow up to 8 weeks for processing.

To set up a Visiting Undergraduates Participating in Research or Clinical Activities appointment, first contact chemistry.dus@yale.edu with the student’s name, contact information, and anticipated dates of appointment. Then the faculty member or delegate (must be Yale faculty or staff member) fills out the application on https://ehsis.yale.edu/EHSIntegrator/Registration. Main Office Staff continues the process in the Sponsored Identity Application to obtain a NetID for the student.
